Az 1848-ban játszódó, valós események ihlette film középpontjában a lengyelországi állomáshelyén szolgáló honvédszakasz dilemmája áll: engedelmeskedjenek-e osztrák feletteseiknek, vagy induljanak a szabadságharc megsegítésére. A Kárpátokon átkelni lehetetlen küldetés, miközben császári csapatok is üldözik őket. A 80 huszár kapcsolódik is a hazai easternciklushoz, el is oldódik attól, miközben rokon a hetvenes évek amerikai, úgynevezett revizionista westernjével is. Annyira sokirányú kapcsolódásokkal bír, hogy nem tartozik egyik ciklushoz vagy műfajhoz sem: filmtörténetünk egyedülálló remekműve.

The dilemma of a regiment stationed in Poland lies at the core of this film set in 1848 and inspired by actual events: should they submit to the orders of their Austrian superiors or set off to support the freedom fight taking place in their homeland. Crossing the cruel Carpathians would appear to be mission impossible, especially when pursued by imperial troops. 80 Hussars is associated with the Hungarian ‘eastern’ cycle and at the same time not part of it, while also being related to the American, so-called revisionist westerns of the 1970s. In fact, it bears within it links to so many different trends that it cannot be pigeonholed into any particular cycle or genre. It is, simply put, a unique masterpiece in Hungarian film history.
