A legendás Universal horrorciklus első női rémfilmje roppant rendhagyó módon kezeli a Lugosi-örökséget: míg Dracula fia híven követte a családi hagyományt 1943-ban, a budapesti Zaleska grófnő bármit megtenne, hogy szabaduljon gyűlölt vámpírlététől. Még arra is hajlandó, hogy pszichiáterhez forduljon, ám fellobbant szerelme a karakán doktor iránt még mélyebbre taszítja mániájába. Bár manapság Hillyer filmje egy röpke leszbikus erőszakjelenetnek köszönheti hírnevét, ennél fontosabb a maga korában újszerű lélektani megközelítése a vámpírmítoszhoz, amely modern addikciódrámát kerekít az alapötletből – egyaránt megidézve a Macskanép klasszikus pszichohorrorját és a Menekülés a pokolból ezredvégi drogfilmjét.

The very first female horror movie in the legendary horror cycle of Universal handles the Lugosi legacy in a highly unconventional way: whereas Son of Dracula (1943) faithfully followed in the family tradition, Countess Zaleska of Budapest would do anything to rid herself of her hated existence as a vampire. She is even prepared to turn to a psychiatrist, but her passion for the resolute doctor tips her ever deeper into mania. Although these days the fame of Hillyer’s film rests largely on a fleeting scene depicting lesbian violence, its true significance instead lies in its (at that time) groundbreaking psychological approach to the vampire myth, transforming the original concept into a modern addiction drama – it is evoked in the classic psycho-horror Cat People and the drug film The Addiction (1995).

Szemben hollywoodi férfiverziójával a női vámpírfilm egy kiemelkedő filmművész álmából született: Dreyer átmeneti alkotása a néma- és hangos film között Sheridan Le Fanu híres rémtörténet, a Carmillát dolgozza, vagy inkább képzeli át sejtelmes mozgóképre. Főhőse, a garabonciás Allan Gray nevéhez illő, félhomályos szürkezónába téved, amikor Courtempierre falujának ódon udvarházában megismerkedik egy átoksújtotta család egyik leányával, akinek nővérét sírontúli szipirtyó kísérti. Dreyer vámpírja, akárcsak filmje, határsávokban mozgó, megfoghatatlan szellemlény: egy egzotikus mesevilág réme helyett hősünk tudatmélyéből bukkan elő, megelevenítve félelmeit és vágyait.

Contrary to its Hollywood male counterpart, the female vampire film arose out of the dream of a prominent filmmaker: Dreyer’s half-way house work standing between silent and sound film is an adaptation of the renowned horror by Sheridan Le Fanu, Carmilla, or perhaps it is more accurate to say he imagined the novel into an ominous motion picture. Our hero, Allan Gray, true to his name drifts into a shadowy grey zone when, in the ancient manor house of Courtempierre, he becomes acquainted with one of the daughters of a cursed family, whose sister is haunted by a ghost from beyond the grave. Dreyer’s vampire, not unlike his movie, is an intangible ghostly being floating on the frontiers of the perceivable: instead of an exotic terror of the fairy tale world, it emerges from the deep subconscious of the hero, giving life to all his fears and desires.
