François Mitterand elnök a francia forradalom 200. évfordulójára új építészeti jelképet szeretne építtetni Párizsnak. A nyílt nemzetközi pályázaton legnagyobb meglepetésre a dán Otto von Spreckelsen (Claes Bang – A négyzet, Az Északi) nyer egy modern, a háborús hódítások helyett a humanizmusnak emléket állító diadalív tervével. Mitterand ragaszkodik ahhoz, hogy közelről felügyelhesse a gigantikus projektet. A tervezésben és anyaghasználatban kérlelhetetlen Spreckelsen makacssága legfontosabb szakmai támasza, egyben felesége (Sidse Babett Knudsen – Borgen, The Duke of Burgundy) számára is próbatételt jelent. Az építész felvállalja a víziója megvalósulásának akadályt állító komoly vitákat, az elsőre megvalósíthatatlannak tűnő építészeti megoldások miatt a kivitelezőkkel éppúgy, mint a politikai érdekek mentén lavírozó elnökkel.

A ma is Párizs elővárosában található, grandiózus és ikonikus épület valós megépítésének körülényeit finom humorral és kiemelkedő vizuális igényességgel dolgozza fel Stéphane Demoustier rendező. A Cannes-i Filmfesztiválon debütált Egy dán építész Párizsbana kérlelhetetlen emberi természet legmagasabb csúcsaira és legmélyebb bugyraiba enged betekintést a kora ‘80-as évek felfűtött politikai klímájában.

President François Mitterrand wants to commission a new architectural symbol for Paris to mark the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution. To widespread surprise, the open international competition is won by the Danish architect Otto von Spreckelsen (played by Claes Bang – The Square, The Northman) with his design for a modern triumphal arch dedicated not to wartime conquest, but to humanism. Mitterrand insists on closely supervising the gigantic project himself. Spreckelsen’s uncompromising stubbornness regarding design and materials becomes a major test both professionally and for his wife (Sidse Babett Knudsen – Borgen, The Duke of Burgundy), who is also his strongest supporter. The architect takes on serious conflicts standing in the way of realizing his vision, battling not only contractors over architectural solutions that initially seem impossible to execute, but also the president, who maneuvers according to political interests.

Director Stéphane Demoustier presents the true story behind the construction of the grand and iconic building, which still stands today in the suburbs of Paris, with subtle humor and outstanding visual sophistication. Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, 'The Great Arch' offers insight into both the highest peaks and deepest depths of uncompromising human nature amid the heated political climate of the early 1980s.
