Roslyn, miután elvált Renóban, vigaszt és szórakozást keres három különc társaságában, akik vadlovak befogására készülnek. Beleszeret az idősödő rodeo-lovasba, Gay-be. Ám a "nagy vadászat" véget vet a románcnak és Roslyn illúzióinak. Akikről azt hitte, szabadok, erősek, bátrak és merészek, azokról kiderül, hogy csak kallódó vagányok... Egyedül Perce, a csapat legifjabb tagja próbál szembeszállni Gay akaratával. Hogy kinyilvánítsa Roslyn iránt érzett csodálatát, szabadon engedi a fogva tartott lovakat...

A halálról, a mítoszok és érzések széttöréséről szóló film a valóságban is tragikus véget ért. A forgatás befejeztével Arthur Miller és Marilyn Monroe házassága felbomlott. Monroenak és Clark Gable-nak ez volt az utolsó alakítása a mozivásznon. Előbb Gable halt meg, de Monroe és Montgomery Clift is csak pár évvel élte túl őt. A film azonban világsiker lett.

Roslyn, after getting divorced in Reno, seeks comfort and entertainment in the company of three eccentric men who are preparing to capture wild horses. She falls in love with Gay, an aging rodeo rider. However, the "great hunt" brings an end to both the romance and Roslyn's illusions. The men she believed to be free, strong, brave, and daring turn out to be nothing more than drifting tough guys. Only Perce, the youngest member of the group, tries to stand up to Gay's will. To express his admiration for Roslyn, he releases the captured horses back into freedom.

The film, which deals with death and the shattering of myths and emotions, also ended tragically in real life. After filming was completed, the marriage of Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe fell apart. It was the final screen performance for both Monroe and Clark Gable. Gable died first, but Monroe and Montgomery Clift survived him by only a few years. Nevertheless, the film became a worldwide success.
