A cseh új hullám mindig is a magyar nézők egyik kedvence volt, ezért is meglepő, hogy az Ördög mérnök halála kevéssé ismert nálunk, és a rendezőnő, Ester Krumbachová, nem tartozik a sokat emlegetett rendezők közé. A cseh mozihoz illően mágikus, varázslatos alkotásban a főhősnőt, vaskos, régi receptkönyvek olvasása közben lepi meg doktor Ördög telefonhívása. A gyakorlatilag egyetlen helyszínen, a vendéglátó biedermeier lakásában játszódó filmecske egy balul sikerült vacsora története, ahol semmi sem úgy alakul, ahogy kellene. De mégis minden jóra fordulhat?

Czech new wave has always been a favourite with Hungarian audiences, which makes it all the more surprising that Murdering the Devil is so little known in this country and its director, Ester Krumbachová, is not a household name. The heroine in this magical, enchanting work that stays true to Czech cinema is busy poring over hefty old recipe books when the peace is broken by a phone call from Mr. Devil. The film, essentially shot in a single location, the Biedermeier flat where the rendezvous happens, is the story of a dinner-for-two gone wrong and where nothing turns out as it should. But then again, maybe everything could work out nicely?
