A történet egy magyar alföldi kisvárosban játszódik. Csikorgó, igazi hideg van - hó nélkül. Több százan állnak a főtéren felállított cirkuszi sátor körül, hogy végre megláthassák az attrakciót, egy bálna kitömött tetemét. Jönnek mindenfelől. A környező tanyákról, az Alföld különböző zugaiból és az ország egészen távoli vidékeiről is. Néma, arctalan, rongyokba burkolódzó tömeg követi az otromba szörnyet. Ez a furcsa állapot - az idegenek megjelenése és a rendkívüli fagy - megzavarja a kisváros békésnek amúgy sem nevezhető rendjét. Az emberi viszonyok felborulnak, a történet ambíciózus szereplői úgy érzik, kihasználhatják a helyzetet, az amúgy is passzivitásra ítélt emberek pedig még nagyobb bizonytalanságba zuhannak. Az elviselhetetlenségig fokozódó feszültséget a bálna mögött lapuló, arctalanságba burkolódzó Herceg figurája robbantja fel. Puszta megjelenése is elegendő ahhoz, hogy elszabaduljanak a gyilkos indulatok. Nem kíméli a tudományosság mögé bújó kívülállást, sem a kamaszos lelkesedést, a kispolgári kényelemféltést, a családot - semmit, amit az európai kultúra az utóbbi évszázadokban magatartásformaként konzervált.

The story takes place in a small town on the Hungarian Great Plain. It is bitterly cold, but there is no snow. Hundreds of people gather around the circus tent erected in the town’s main square, eager to finally see the attraction: the stuffed carcass of a whale. They have come from everywhere, from the surrounding farmsteads, from remote corners of the Great Plain, and from distant parts of the country. A silent, faceless crowd wrapped in rags follows the grotesque monster.

This strange situation, the arrival of strangers and the extraordinary cold, disrupts the small town’s already far-from-peaceful order. Human relationships are thrown into turmoil. The story’s ambitious characters sense an opportunity to exploit the situation, while those already condemned to passivity sink into even greater uncertainty.

The tension, mounting to an unbearable level, is finally detonated by the figure of the Prince, lurking behind the whale and shrouded in facelessness. His mere appearance is enough to unleash murderous impulses. He spares nothing: neither the detached stance hiding behind the guise of scientific objectivity, nor youthful enthusiasm, nor petty-bourgeois fear of losing comfort, nor the family itself, nothing that European culture has preserved over the past centuries as established forms of human behavior.
