Rongyos csavargó kéredzkedik föl egy postakocsira. Az elképedt utasok megvetéssel, gyűlölettel fogadják. Néhány perc múlva azonban Juan bosszút áll rajtuk, kirabolja őket. Véletlenül találkozik az egykori ír forradalmárral, Johnnal, aki mostanában robbantással keresi a kenyerét. A "pukkantónak" csúfolt férfi a környék német bányatulajdonosa megbízásából ezüst után kutat. Juan más munkát ajánl neki. Be is mennek a közeli városba, hogy kirabolják a bankot. Ott azonban pénz helyett politikai foglyokat őriznek. Juan így akarata ellenére belekeveredik a forradalomba. Mivel tudja, hogy ahol forradalom van, ott elszabadul a pokol, minél gyorsabban igyekszik megszabadulni a "nemzeti hős" kényelmetlen szerepétől.
